Here's a news item that was sent to me:
ST.LOUIS — The Manufacturers Railway has asked the federal government for
permission to cease service over all its lines. The railroad, which was formed
in 1887, handles shipments to and from its owner, Anheuser-Busch.
The company operates two lines: the one-mile "Brewery Line" to Anheuser-Busch,
and the 2.6-mile First Street line, which historically served a variety of
shippers. Since 2005, the First Street line has seen shipments from only three
customers, and last year, just five carloads traversed it.
The brewery line has seen declining shipments, and last year, Anheuser-Busch
decided to ship all beer from the brewery by truck. The last boxcars shipped out
March 13. Since that time, the brewery has seen just 6-7 daily inbound
shipments, and nothing outbound.
Manufacturers doesn't seek to formally abandon its trackage, meaning the
infrastructure will be left in place if the Surface Transportation Board
approves cessation of service.
