Look at the history, rather than the rhetoric. Although Republicans are frequently pointed out for their lack of support for Amtrak, ( think Reagan & Bush zero - funding ), it has been Democratic President Carter who cut the most Amtrak routes & services. Speaking of Carter, what was meant by the phrase : " And starting in 1973 under Carter we got our first taste of... " . Taste of WHAT -- Peanut Butter ??? In 1973 Jimmy Carter was the little - known Governor of Georgia, with no influence on national politics. He didn't become President until 1977 !!!
