IF the BN had put a similar abandonment filing out when they closed operations over Stampede, the UP would have filed a similar "claim" to that line in record time. Same reason that the BN has (and in one segment, maintains service on) the isolated trackege between Garrison and Pipestone, MT. It's all about keeping somebody else out of a route or an interchange opportunity. The UP is happy to give the BNSF trackage or haulage rights to run via Denver and the BNSF is happy to keep the UP running via Vancouver/Portland.
