Very interesting posts, OPB, Mike & mook. I always thought The Milwaukee Road Electrification was the image of efficiency, with regenative braking to both slow the downhill train & help power the uphill train. I never realized that this was only possible with DC power. I do recall reading about how the power meters in the substations would run backwards with a train going downhill & no uphill train nearby to help absorb the power being generated.
