The Apple Growers Ice & Cold Storage facility in Watsonville was destroyed by fire this past week. I understand the business community that used this facility wants it rebuilt as soon as possible. I see there is a two track industrial spur on the property, but I believe it has not been used for years.

I don’t know why rail shipments stopped from this facility, but I think this would be a good opportunity for the businesses of Watsonville and Sierra Northern if a modern rail transfer design were incorporated into the new facility. Hopefully the tracks won’t be pulled to make room for a larger facility without rail service.
