MPI has been building the MP36 design (16-645 with Wabtec's Q-Tron electronics) and the MP40 design (16-710 with EMD's EM-2000 electronics).
Rumors are that both GE and EMD are preparing to re-enter the passenger locomotive market with new designs in anticipation of a large Amtrak order. EMD is supposed to open a new U.S. shop for this, GE may use MPI for part or some of the work since they are already at capacity at Erie. (GE just tried to convert part of a GE shop for more locomotive work that currently builds jet engines and used to build something for marine use, but the unions did not like the deal.) The possible GE/MPI deal may make future MP40 series unlikely, and of course EMD might bounce some of the work to parent Progress Rail.
There are other companies that have and may offer passenger models. It seems likely that just two units would come from MPI, but if Amtrak increases the order ... - we will have to wait and see. Since this is "Hish Speed Rail" money, they may insist on something totally different just to look faster.
