Thanks for the comments Robby. That helps a lot. I had nearly forgotten about the continuous
blowdown, yet another reason that the Burlington version of 4960 would not have worked out
very well in Arizona. Continuous blowdown is a steam industry practice and has been for many
decades, we used it where I worked. One crew forgot to open it after firing up a boiler and
within 4-5 hours at normal steaming rates (140,000 lbs./hr.) could not control the water level
as it was foaming so badly. Luckily, the head operator on shift that day was an old head. He
figured it out and sent somebody up top to open the first valve off of the top of the steam
drum and it settled right out. They never made that mistake again.
