You probably had hardware incompatibility (mostly the chipsets on the MOBO), which can be overcome if you research things carefully (i.e. figure out which hardware will and won't work with the system and then purchase accordingly). There are a lot of European banks which still use OS/2, with HPFS386. Tried Red Hat and SuSe, looked at Unbuntu, but didn't care for them (could never get the partition/filesystem permissions in fstab to work as described).
