On August 7, 1978, my dad and I awoke at six am, had breakfast and then he drove me from our motel in Anaheim to Colton Crossing, where he checked in with the operator at Colton tower to make sure it was okay to leave his sixteen year old son for the day. The operator said he figured I'd be safe. My dad then went back to Anaheim to take my mom and brother to Disneyland.
One of the highlights of that day was catching three brand spanking new GP40Xs leading train 168 past the tower in the afternoon sun, maybe an hour or so before my dad came back to pick me up. As an aside, the 215 Freeway hadn't been built yet.
