Perhaps they should start installing red-died concrete on pedestrian paths sections to indicate the "Red Zone". You enter this area and you could be killed. Trains generally don't swerve so it ought to work as a visual reminder.
I know I've seen many of the yellow bumpy panels installed before crossing just color the area between them.
With the proliferation of headphone use and lack of common sense it seems like a updated standard could help things. When you consider young, old, sight impaired, hearing impaired, bicycles, skateboards, wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility challenged, etc. There are many challenges to creating a safe crossing. Nothing is better than common sense of "there's a train track, their could be a train, it could kill me". but as that does not seem to be enough, what else can be done?
