SP 4449, UP 8444, and rumors

Great time warp in these two pictures. I think that 4449 has gotten the better part of the deal.

During the fall of 1974 when 4449 was being restored at the Hoyt St roundhouse in Portland, rumors were flying that UP's 8444 had some fatal flaw and would never run again. We all know how that turned out - thanks UP!

We thought it would be cool to start a rumor that 4449 could not be steamed, so the boiler would be gutted, a diesel engine/generator installed inside, and traction motors wound around the driver axles; like a MILW bipolar electric! Figured that would get the foamers really stirred up.

While of course this was totally false, there were some serious firebox issues which, fortunately, an expert welder by the name of Joe Crumley was able to repair.
