You have friends and you have FRIENDS and Joe was one of those FRIENDS. He was the nicest guy and he genuinely cared about people. I'll always treasure the years we volunteered together on the Vernonia, South Park and Sunset Steam Railroad. Unfortunately Joe didn't get to enjoy long years of retirement. As I recall he was 71 when he passed away in June 1977. His wife Linda passed away about 1½ years later. I visited in their home in the beautiful Oregon Coast town of Otter Rock. What a commute Joe had to and from the Portland area: 2½ hours each way. But they really enjoyed living on the Coast and he patiently made the drive. At least he didn't have to pay today's gasoline prices! Long before Joe's work on the 4449 he was well-known to the mechanical department of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway where his welding expertise was greatly appreciated.
