With all due respect:
No - WE do not need these self appointed vigilante organizations advocating for the environment. Only extremists need that. The fact is that these myriads of unelected (and not even appointed by those we did elect) environmental groups have brought us nothing but absolute chaos - upon chaos.
They mostly are NOT right on! Their only real accomplishment is to successfully slop at the public trough; not to mention that intended or not, all the chaos they cause seriously interferes with virtually all economic activity; and does therefore play into the hands of socialists and other opponents of American capitalism.
With all the neanderthal idiocy that is usually advocated nowadays in the name of environmentalism, real improvements are often seriously set back. Anyone remember the MTBE fiasco. Or the special California gasoline formulations, that even though lower in per gallon pollution; reduced mileage sharply, increasing the number of gallons used for the same miles - and thus actually increased net pollution. Or the big push to produce ethanol, even with its massive carbon footprint (they completely forgot about that), relative energy inefficiencies, and world wide food shortages. YEP - we need more of that all right!
Much environmental improvement of late has in fact come from businesses looking to enhance their bottom line, or at least their images. Of course, much of that is pure fluff - unimportant in the big picture. Some has come from "intelligent" legislation and regulation (though rare, it does happen) by elected officials and experts duly appointed to that duty.
But we can have our environmental cake and a healthy economy too - if only we would repeal federal funding of all these "wacko" environmental groups, and strip them all of their special legal standings in federal courts; returning enforcement of environmental law to where it exclusively belongs - OUR GOVERNMENT ! Do it at the state level too.
Just think - no more chaos! Our government (elected by us) would actually decide what needs more enforcement and what doesn't. Environmental law would then be enforced the same way all other law is enforced - by those democratically appointed by US. No more economic chaos! No more vigilante extortion in the name of the environment.
With reasonable people elected to legitimate authority - sans all the legal interference from the fringe, we could actually obtain reasonable balance between all human needs, both environmental and economic. But the way it is now; that is nothing but a silly old man's pipe dream!
