A histogram?

A few years back, my opthomologist told me that my prescription for my glasses did not need to be replaced. In fact it, it had not changed in several years to which he commented "...that is quite remarkable for a man your age." My age? He is older than I am!
To day I got a note from one of the poobahs at railpictures.net telling that, no matter what I saw in the photo, it was underexposed. It was underexposed because the histogram said it was. Yeah right. First what the hell is a histogram? Sounds like something my wife had several years ago. Do I need a histogram when ever I look at photo to tell me it is under or over exposed? For some funny reason, my eyes still tell me that. My eyes tell what I like and don't like. Don't need no stinking histogram. (apologies to Alfonso Bedoya)
