Interesting info. I had no idea that steam whistles often had six chimes. Regarding the actuating valves: I was fortunate to get up in the cabs of two "Mallets", as the crews called them (4190 and 4271), and ride around for nearly an hour doing some switching in Hayward in one, the 4179. I still have the pencil-written records I kept of every engine my brother and I got up in during that period, though not every date was recorded.

My recollection is that all of those, as well as the several 4400's I got up in, had two levers right in front of or just beside the engineer that were squeezed to operate the whistle and air horn. An exception to that may have been the 4487, which stopped for a meet right behind our house in April or May, 1956. Even as a kid I noted that it was a Baldwin, not a streamlined Lima, and thus different from all the Daylights that we saw. It may have had a whistle cord but I don't recall.
