I'm not sure, but I believe Santa Fe's ATS installation between Hesperia & Daggett was only for passenger trains. I don't recall seeing the ATS pickup shoe on freight diesels, unlike SFe's ATC system in Illinois, where all lead locomotives had to have it.( This was because of no intermediate signals, only at junctions & crossovers. ) For years the only diesels you would see leading SFe freights between E. Fort Madison, IA., & Pequot, Il., were U 25 B's & GP - 20's, due to their being equipped with cab signals.
Perhaps Old Pole Burner can expound on the differences between the 2 systems ???
