Well, Transit America's bid was
$26 million dollars less (first years numbers) than Amtrak's bid. Perhaps in these days of billions here and there, $26 million sounds like chump change, but its not. Spread over Caltrain's annual ridership of about 11 million, that works out to slightly over $2.50 per rider per trip. I would bet that the average Caltrain rider would much prefer riding on Transit America's operation rather than paying an additional $2.50 per trip. (This is not to suggest that riders were given such an option.)
