They do not kick coach passengers off the through coach at San Antonio.
During the time you are in San Antonio, not much going on. A 24 hour Denneys, is about 3 blocks from the station. The famous Riverwalk, is another 2 blocks or so. Look at the timetable for times in SAS.

You will have a very good chance to upgrade on the last night of the Eagle-Sunset west of El Paso. Diner on Eagle closes around 6:30 pm, so that the crew gets off at Austin TX for the night. Lounge remains open

In Chicago, on Sat & Sun, the MERTA commuter trains have a all day pass, the last I knew was $5.00 may be more now. Look at their web site.

For the CTA subway, elevated trains and buses, they have a 1 day, 3 day and 5 day that can be purchased. Look at their web site.

You sure do not want to take an auto to downtown Chicago.
