Hello all,
Just to share the experience, on Saturday, August 18, I greatly enjoyed the regular (Saturday and Sunday) trip behind SP 2-6-0 #1744 between Alamosa and La Veta, Colorado over La Veta (some just call it Veta) Pass. The 122-mile round trip has a wye for turning the engine at both ends. The Pass is very scenic, with numerous sharp curves giving good views of the engine, and makes hard word in both directions for the engine pulling four passenger cars up a 2000 foot elevation change. No diesel helper is used. This former Rio Grande line is now a short line with daily diesel freight service.
The train has a premium-class service which gives access to the rear open observation platform with excellent and varied snacks served throughout the trip. The train also operates weekdays, but with a diesel.
