Steam locomotives have their own separately operated independent brake systems and don't operate in MU mode unless they're specifically equipped for that, and I don't know of any in North America that currently are (NYC and Pennsy had some that were, IIRC, but I'm not sure of that); the ex-DRGW locomotives running on the C&TS never were. The lead engineer usually controls the train brake.
