In simple terms it keeps the coupler centered during dynamic braking and heavy slack action pressure. Without it the coupler can be shoved all the way to one side creating lateral forces pushing that end of the unit to the side. The cruds lack them so they had to be placed in a specific order in the engine consist to minimize potential damage/derailment. I would assume these auction units will require blocks and locks to be installed in order to mimic alignment control.
