My first adventure with SW-1500s was in Salinas. We were driving home from LA and stopped to roll a few by, when a brand new pair of cruds passed with about 50 cars (mostly refers and tanks). The hogger missed the orders, stopped and backed up to get them.
I still remember his asking 'why did they make such a good loco, and couple them cab to cab so I can't see any better than a steam engine?'
However, I still remember them walking away towards Wattsonville barking all the way, but not one slip from a stand start.
