Part of the problem is that lately there have been no good railroad books published. Pacific Fast Mail is no longer, for example. All of the books I have purchased lately have been used books from the 1960s and 1970s, and half of them I've gotten from eBay (and Powell's does a lot of business on eBay, and they don't always have the books that I buy.) Dan is a great guy but unless he knows of some closet railroad book authors and publishers that are dying to get their work out there isn't much reason for me to stop in.
And...there are a few books out there I'd like to get but I'm not paying $100+ for them. Same reason I've all but gotten out of the model railroading hobby. Once I bought my digital camera, I can take all the pictures I want for free (OK, so I have to put gas in the car, but I can manage combining railfaning with other tasks.)
