If we are going to tell stories here, then I have to tell the one from Jan. 1989. I, along with about 2 dozen railfans were riding a private railcar out of Oakland. We went with the owner to the yard (only the owner was allowed, the rest of us, technically weren't) and he said when we got to the yard, go immediately to the car, get on it and stay on it. Well, I and about 4 others did what he said. The others went about the yard, video taping and filming. When the West Oakland Interlocking Tower Operator lined the Amtrak Switch Engine into the yard, she told them on the radio to be on the lookout for about 2 dozen railfan in the yard, taking pictures. SP Police heard that and immediately sent 2 patrol cars for this. Needless to say, it was not a good sight. In the end, everyone was told to get on the car immediately and SP Police spoke to the owner. They told the Police Dispatcher that they were going to setup and keep a log on the owner for future violations. Then, the 2 Patrol Officers in their 2 cars surrounded the private car like it was a prison. The Amtrak Switch Crew saw this, and to help out the railfans, immediately pulled the Private Car and an Amtrak "Add-on" Coach to the East End of the Yard, then went to have breakfast. The Officers told the Police Dispatcher that everything was now O.K., that the Private Car was on its way to 16th St. Depot with all the " Suspects" on it and then they left. After that, we all joked that the SP Police were ready to attack the "White Gang", that walked into the yard completely "Armed" with Video Cameras and Cameras, prepared to shoot everyone and everything in sight! The owner was pissed, his name and I.D. was the only one the SP Police took and checked.
