The day prior to Winterail a group of us usually try to take an Amtrak trip in the Stockton area. While researching potential destinations I noticed that there is a wide discrepancy in fair versus distance. The best deal is Stockton to Emeryville which is $10. Stockton to Sacramento, a much shorter trip, is $13. Stockton to Fresno, just slightly longer, is $36. To take the Capitol service from Sacramento to Emeryville will set you back $26 and this is not a reserved seat train. Can anyone explain why there is such a difference in the per mile fares?
