Sure, they have a lot of miles and use on them, but some are far from through!
I certainly can vouch for ex UP 2891, former DRGW 5362, which was rebuilt at North Little Rock in 1999 and is now owned by NIWX and leased to EWG where it is in regular service. It is reliable, dependable and has had very few problems in the year that it has been in service. The extended range dynamics are to die for and when you first go into dynamics it growls just like a MILW Little Joe electric! Unlike the SD45's, the engine does not rev up until the fans spin up, and then it really sings to you. Check out
this recording of 2891 in dynamics. Also, it pulls really good at low speeds and does so while using a whole lot less fuel than the SD45's.
I love the SD45's and will certainly miss them, but the Tunnel Motors are a worthy replacement.
