The viaduct was built to get the tracks that were
already there - in the street, and back in 1907.
Even more so, that was back in the day when America
was "can do".

I wondered the same - it looks like it was designed
to be high platform but it's too far from the track.
I'd love to hear the answer.

I'll tell you - it's quite a site to see Amtrak stop
on the second track out from the station and watch
a crowd of folks pour out onto the mainline! I
believe this is not as much an issue as it appears
since the outer 2 tracks may be for SEPTA only
which terminates at the station.

It's a surprisingly busy station during weekdays.
