So the trains get to the Central Valley and then have to go south to either the ex-WP or ex-SP crossings of the Sierras before they seriously start heading east.
While we're still high on some of that Humboldt county sensimilla, let's rebuild the SP Sterling City Branch, add some new construction up toward Lake Almanor, including a new and improved railroad along the ROW of the now-abandoned Almanor Railroad, use some trackage rights over the BNSF Gateway Sub for a few miles to Westwood, and run on a re-built ex-SP line to Susanville, Wendel and further east! Voila! A new route across the Sierras! Only thing you'd have to contend with would be the hikers and bikers not wanting to surrender their Biz Johnson Trail!
