I believe that the film's producers originally wished to shoot some or all of the midwestern scenes on the Rock Island between Peoria and Chicago, but were turned down by that faltering road's management. Rock Island references - like Rockdale station (a few miles west of Joliet, IL) and the Illinois River bridge - stuck in the final movie script.
