There are pictures taken in the early 1900's of palm trees in front of Portland's Union Station and the SP station in Eugene. Rumor has it that the SP also planted palm trees along sections of Sandy Blvd in NE Portland. It was said to be a PR project to get people to take the SP to vacation spots in California and Arizona.

To mimic this, palm trees were added to the plaza in front of Portland Union Station during a recent landscaping project.
