There are no deep pockets. We are a complete shoestring grassroots operation- which may be why we didn't get the signatures that we needed. Our total expenses for the first run was probably under $10,000, all funded by donations from local citizens.
We are not NIMBY's- I'm a freight rail fan, and we voted for this project, and feel like rail done right would benefit our community. But what we're getting is not what we voted (and are paying) for. We addressed our concerns to SMART, and they brushed us off. We have no recourse (SMART has an appointed board, not elected), so we took it back to the people. Part of our concern is that the line was shortened from 70 to 37 miles, and that it is not being run by railroaders. We feel that there is a good chance that left alone, there's a good chance that it will collapse under it's overly-optimistic projections.
Anyway, we are weighing our options, and how/whether to continue. Being that it's an all volunteer group, we have lives (kids and businesses to run), and have to balance real life with community activism.
I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have.
Cheers-
