Since telegraph messages were not exactly "private", anyone that needed to telegraph a confidential message back to their headquarters letting them know they found the mineral deposits, made the deal, found what they were looking for, etc. Obviously the code would have to be agreed upon ahead of time.

Some companies, such as Baldwin, would use code words instead of part or model numbers. The telegraph message stating that a "banana" needed to be shipped immediately was not as likely to get corrupted compared to ordering a part number 5938A.
