After a lot of "deferred maintenance", RailAmerica thought they could extract a bunch of money from taxpayers to bring the line back up to standard, and abruptly shut down the line in a power play in 2007.

Taxpayers ultimately did pay to upgrade the line, including multiple tunnels, but the Port gained control of the line in the process.
