I have caught the UP Plummer coming back into town on my way home with only 3 or 4 cars from Plummer Forest Products--meaning that they missed the STMA connection. The UP crew normally goes to lunch at the diner and don't leave until about 3PM. If things work out perfectly, the STMA power is waiting at the wye. The UP holds onto their Mica and Plummer cars and cuts away for the STMA to grab the rest of the train and go. If the UP arrives and doesn't see anybody waiting, they call them on the radio to see if they are close before going through the trouble of stashing the stuff on the interchange tracks. They then switch PFP and go to lunch and hope that the STMA brings something for them to take back. From talking to the STMA, I know that they talk to the UP on interchange days about arrival times at the junction. The STMA has been known to go to Plummer late when they know that the UP will be going to Fairfield first instead of on their way back. It seems to be the STMA who wants to make sure that they have cars to take back home with them. The UP may not mind if stuff sits at the interchange for a couple of extra days except that they have to climb the hill out of Plummer with an extra large train. Twenty seven cars isn't that big though considering that's about what they used to pull out of there almost every trip.
