Actually, I don't think the Financial Times minds links to its content; it just
doesn't want people to copy and past the entire content.


I've traveled on both fast and slower trains in Europe. The important point is
that in many cases, you have a choice.

There are times when an overnight train makes sense, as the author of the column
pointed out.


But, an important point is that in Europe the standard for new rolling stock used
in international service has long been 200 km/h (about 125 mph). Yes, a lot of
Amtrak rolling stock is capable of going over 100 mph, but it very seldom does, other
than on the NEC. And, some "conventional" (non dedicated high-speed) equipment
in Europe can now run at speeds well above 200 km/h.

In Europe, conventional long-distance intercity trains typically do go over 100
mph. And on most lines trains run at hourly or two-hour intervals all day long.


Yes, there are still slower locals on some branch lines in Europe.
