...which is, in fact, what those Russian diesels you mentioned are based on. Early in 1942, the U.S. War Department commandeered several RS-1s, converted them to RSD-1s, and sent them to work on the Trans-Iranian Railway linking Iran and what was then the Soviet Union. the Soviets copied that model and built several thousand of them (I don't know offhand what the Soviet model designation was/is), and later models followed the same basic design.
