Although I can't be certain, this has to be the fellow I met on a Union Pacific railfan trip in Wyoming in 1968: "John Roy Gabriel"? - a glamorously handsome young fellow with a very persuasive personality. He got me to get a Rail Travel Card, and convinced me to exchange my Pullman UP tickets to Los Angeles for a trip on the California Zephyr to SLC and thence to LA via UP Train #5. I knew him for only those three days: I later tried to locate him from phone books and what he had told me of his home, but to no avail. I never saw him after that.
Considering the influence he had on me in a mere three days, I am not surprised that he has made his presence felt around the country. His family have my most heartfelt sharing of sorrow, for whatever right I might have, and I know that they made as big a contribution to Roy as he to them. My experience is one of shock and sorrow - and wonder: what magnificent things can lay in store in the future of a young man with vision.
