Looking at these photos (that bottom shot is awesome!) and yesterdays -- I don't think that amount of deterioration happened overnight, or even over the last few Sierra Northern years. It takes a while to lose that much steel to rust, even in seacoast conditions. IOW UP and SP probably didn't take care of the place either. I don't know about Capitola but I suspect that if you want to be able to run 286K# cars and that rust spot isn't the only one the bridge has to be replaced, probably with concrete. If it was even almost that bad in 1989 how did it not fall down?
