Back in the "good old days" when Amtrak had spare equipment sitting around they used to run either beefed up consists of regular trains or extra sections. Amtrak had a set of Amfleet/Horizon cars that would float up and down the West Coast covering such things as special trains to Levenworth, racing specials to Del Mar, Reno Fun train etc. Back in the early 80's Sports World Tours in Portland would regularly put enough riders together to run extra sections. These trains would wait in Seattle until the games were finished before leaving.
