It was an early fuel-saving experiment the SP used on a select number of Geeps, SD9's (and maybe a few F's?) One tank was devoted to diesel for starting/warm-up and the other for heavy black oil for use on the road. The heavier oil would provide better 'mileage' but in reality wasn't very practical in terms of switching over or having the engine shutdown with it in the fuel system. The program didn't last long but was another example of SP's willingness to try new technologies.
