Location of the whistle on the locomotive will have a lot to do with the sound of a whistle. When I put the SP1233 in service on the Yolo Shortline we fired the engine with no Jacket and the whistle sounded very shrill. After the Jacket was applied to the dome it change the resonance of the whistle taking up air space behind it. The whistle had a much mellower sound with the Jacket applied.
