In emails and in written letter form between myself and Mr. Curlee, I too knew that this site would eventually close and with the cancellation of the corporate entity name, the end could well be within sight and possibly be announced perhaps after this holiday. But while the "run" has been great and since no one has ever offered to step forward and continue the site, shutting to down with dignity is the right way. And I'm sure that Mr. Curlee will just channel his energy into other worthwhile subjects including amateur radio as he is a ham amongst the elite group of radio operators. With the coming of the VNB radio operations being pushed onto the railroads, those capable to securing a worthy radio to receive those soon-to-be VNB frequencies will thin out the railfan crowd even more. Just like postings over on the TO site, first the NB and then the implementation of the VNB operations coupled with the cost of what it will take from those radio and scanner manufactures just to produce a viable radio or scanner might just be one more "nail in the coffin" for those remaining railfans.
Plus factor in the changes the radio operations are seeing with the various state agencies.
Those radio and scanner companies will either see a viable market for them or they'll wither away into the sunset. If anything, the amateur and commercial radio market will adapt if there is enough interest aside from the monetary investment it will involve. Time is the answer!
