Considering the combined Ports of Los Angeles & Long Beach handle more 20 TEU's than any other U.S. port complex, the loss of any business is notable, no matter how small.
Regarding Seattle & Tacoma, the latest round of their continual spat is progressing, as Tacoma Terminal 54 just took over the handling of NYK, Hapag - Lloyd, & OOCL; said business being taken away from Seattle's Terminal 18 ( aka " The Black Hole " ). Tacoma terminals have lower operating costs, which allowed them to underbid Seattle. Port of Tacoma terminals are also closer to Interstate 5, with NO stadium traffic issues, and all 4 major Tacoma terminals have direct on - dock rail access. Seattle Terminals 30 & 46 do not have rail access of any sort, even though BNSF blocks the only driveway into & out of T - 46 with lengthy switching moves out the North end of SIG / Stacy St. yard. I can see the day coming when Port of Seattle moves the remaining business out of T - 30 & T - 46, as these facilities are located close to downtown and the waterfront can be redeveloped at a HUGE profit for the Port. T - 30 used to be the Cruise Ship terminal for Seattle, BTW.
