This isn’t as simple as it appears. The so-called hidden assets were in a two trust funds, which is money collected for a specific purpose. The larger fund being for off road recreation improvements that resulted from fees collected from ORV riders. The funds, and the fees associated with it, are a creation of our not-to-bright legislature. In order for the auditors and legislators to get the right answers, they would have to ask the right questions. The only possible reason the legislators are ticked off about the unreported funds, is a missed opportunity to raid a trust fund that resulted from fees collected for a specific purpose. They no doubt learned this trick from the Congress that has done the same thing with the SS and other federal trust funds. Technically, the funds do not exist to supplement bad management of general fund expenditures. But be assured, there is no money the legislature wouldn’t grab if given the opportunity. What they would do in this case, is “borrow” the trust funds, but don’t count on the legislative thieves ever repaying the money to the trust funds.
