The islands were for getting on and off the Street Cars. Jaywalking was a fact of life in San Francisco. I used to ride the N Judah to work and back home every day. Love the shot of Market Street and the street cars and trolley buses.
The #6 trolley bus would go by my place and at night it was always exciting to see the line arc or for the trolley line to come off. The driver would have to get out and realign the poles. Many years ago and fond memories.
