He was nicknamed "The Commodore" by his own choosing, making it very clear that he didn't want to be known as "The Admiral" (source: SP RFE RRJ, who told me this a few days after the incident).

Helicopter Hall on the radio one fine afternoon in 1988 at the Desert yard: "OK Commodore, bring the flagship to a stop." .. .. .. "OK Commodore, bring the flagship back". Commodore: "OK, just as soon as Wheezing Eagle gets on the engine".
