The simple answer is that all the old growth timber cut down. Back in 1910 there was not the kind of highway network that exists today, and these large scale lumber operations were railroad centric. Timbering was much more labor intensive than today. Nowadays you don't need boiler makers, and blacksmiths etc. According to this site there were once 400 men employed by the Mumby Lumber and Shingle Company.
