Advertisers sometimes buy a national advertising schedule because it is cheaper than buying a split run schedule to cover only one part of the country. As a bonus the message might reach an industrial shipping manager in Los Angeles who has not been contactred by the railroad previously. Advertising prices tend to be very negotiable in broadcasting.

Companies sometimes create advertising designed to create a favorable impression of the company with the public. That can help keep the stock price up.

I doubt that advertising had any other hidden motive.
