This is just way too simplistic...
Regardless of where you stand on Mr. Hammond...fact is, he and his group did keep it running for as long as they had a cash flow from which to work. I don't know if he ever made any money on the passenger excursions- but I have my doubts. Freight is where the money was in that operation. What killed the railroad had more to do with the greater economics of trying to maintain a viable railroad across Siskiyou Summit- once CORP figured out they couldn't do it, the YW was as good as dead no matter who owned it.
Remember also that Court and his group bought the railroad after it had received permission to abandon the line, and they did bring it back to life. On my one visit to the railroad (while it was running) under Court's ownership, I saw more maintenance of track and equipment being done than in the last dozen or so years of the Kyle years.
Quite a lot has been written and debated here and elsewhere about business practices, ethics, and the like on this railroad. All things aside, pinning the blame on one man for killing this railroad is a bridge too far.
