There are (or were) several former Seattle & North Coast 50' boxcars still in revenue service long after that road was abandoned in 1987 (I think that's when it was abandoned, anyway...), and I still see traces of many other fallen flag roads on older freight cars passing through Belen.

It's not at all unusual for a locomotive or piece of rolling stock to still be in service long after all other traces of its original owner have faded away, sometimes outlasting those railroads by several decades.
